I found myself in a career that wasn’t meant for me

I was able to change my career around and you can too!

I have never fully known what I wanted to do in my career. From a young age, I’ve always been creative and had an artistic eye, both in design and in the music industry.

However, for the past few years, I have spent my career studying electronics in college and also working as a roofer for over 8 years. I soon began to realise that this career path wasn’t making me happy, and I knew I had to make a change. I wanted something new for me, a new adventure, a new turn in my life and in my career.

Although I wasn’t exactly sure what I wanted to do, I knew that the creative industry had always been appealing to me. I am a lead singer and guitarist of a band called Escapade. We have written and published our songs and performed in various places such as the 02 Arenas!

Being involved in the musical aspect made me want to explore deeper into other creative industries. At the age of 30, I decided to turn things around to find a career I actually enjoyed.

Now it was time for the most difficult challenge of all… Finding a course that was best suited for me!

Trying to find courses that I felt best suited me was a very difficult challenge. I struggle with ADHD which can make learning a lot more challenging. After researching different courses and educators online, I found the one that stood out a mile away and was best suited for me.

Joining the Creative Design School

From my research on the school and its courses, I was pleased to hear that The Creative Design School is flexible and tailored for you. Having a one-to-one tutor/ design coach means that my personal weaknesses are the main priority to help me achieve my goals.

I did feel apprehensive about whether graphic design was for me and if it was something I could make a career out of. Struggling with ADHD made me feel worried about not having face-to-face learning as throughout my education years, I’ve been taught in a classroom. However, despite feeling like this, I decided to take this new step in my career. My first step was to try the Introduction to Graphic Design Short Course to help me find out if graphic design was what I wanted to pursue in my career.

What I found very beneficial about the courses offered by The Creative Design School is their layout structure. Struggling with ADHD meant that I could never really stick to a certain plan, I tend to rush ahead of myself. However, the layout structure of the Introduction to Graphic Design Short Course helped me to stay more organised, and with the assistance of my tutor/ design coach, I was stress-free with his reassurance and passed this course with flying colours!

Finding my interest in graphic design, I have now enrolled in the Graphic Design Level 2 Diploma Course which I am currently studying. This course so far has helped me to further develop my skills and knowledge with software and other graphic design techniques. As I progress, I hope to one day pursue my dream of becoming a freelance graphic designer.

For those who may feel lost in their career and want to begin studying graphic design, join The Creative Design School and take on a new adventure by beginning with the Introduction to Graphic Design Short Course. You may surprise yourself and find out you’re more creative than you think!

Sam is now halfway through our Graphic Design Level 2 Diploma Course and we look forward to sharing his next creative adventure in his journey with us here in the coming months.
