Start with Purpose – Design with Impact.

Creating designs with impact, purpose, and communication is crucial for designers because it effectively builds brand identity, improves consumer engagement, and conveys a message. A good design helps businesses to stand out, connect with their audience, and help inform decision-making. As a freelancer, creating impactful designs will make more people engage with you. This will lead to a successful career as a freelance designer.

How do I create designs that effectively communicate?

Before creating any design, you must sit down and ask yourself:

“What is the purpose of my design?”

This will create an effective starting point that will ensure your design has a purpose. Despite being able to create communicative designs, you as a designer must understand how the human brain works and how different factors play a key role in allowing your design to have a clear message to an audience.

DO NOT overcomplicate your design with too much information. A successful designer knows that the use of empty space can be visually appealing because it draws the reader’s eye to what is actually important in your design – the core message that you want to convey. Try using empty space in your next design and watch how it immediately communicates more!

Remember!
Keep your design simple and unique

Visual hierarchy also comes into play in order to make your designs have a purpose. Understanding what colours generate different emotions is key. The use of colour is a powerful communication tool that creates different moods and influences perceptions. For example, red could generate the feeling of love or anger, and black could emphasise evilness or death. Familiarising yourself with this will add purpose to your design and help you to communicate your overall message much better.

Before you get started

Begin to think about what target audience you want your message to be for. This is a crucial element to consider in the process of designing. Using fonts and images will determine what group of people you want to target. For example, if you wish to target young children, use big, bold lettering – this makes the words easier to read. As for images, it is important that they are simple and basic for young children; however, designs targeted towards an older age group could be more complex. Always remember, however, that simple designs with a powerful message that is effectively communicated will add more purpose to your design and make your message easier to understand by your audience.

Many people consider graphic design a career because they are creatives who know how to draw and draw well. But this is not the case. Graphic design is all about the psychology of communication and understanding how to communicate your key message through effective visual communication.
